    Every Safari is powered by a 180 hp Lycoming O-360 or IO-360 with a 2,000-hour TBO. It is a certified aircraft engine, not a conversion.

  • Low operating costs

    The Safari does not require continual repairs and replacements. Nothing significant is due until the 500-hour mark. Enjoy more flight time and less tool time.

  • Performance with a load

    Load up two fluffy guys and full fuel and still fly on a hot day. A 650 lb useful load, 1,000 fpm climb and a 10,000 ft service ceiling.

Nothing significant is required until the 500-hour mark — a long time for a helicopter not being used commercially. The suggested replacement schedule for a Safari 400 works out to a parts reserve of $23.86 per flight hour, and all replacements are suggested rather than required, subject to condition inspection.

Behind that is a 180 hp Lycoming with a 2,000-hour TBO and a rotor system whose critical components are individually serialized and tracked through material certification, dimensional inspection and assembly verification.

Earn your rating in your own Safari.

You do not need to rent someone else's helicopter to become a helicopter pilot. As the builder-owner of an experimental amateur-built aircraft, you can train in the Safari you built — and Safari will help you find the instructor and the examiner to do it.

YES! We will work with you to qualify a Certified Flight Instructor near you. When you are ready, we have several Designated Pilot Examiners who are authorized to conduct your "check ride" in your Safari.

The full story, 1953 to today
  1. 1953

    The Helicom

    Aerospace engineer Harold "Pop" Emigh and his son design the single-seat Helicom, a homebuilt that would have qualified as an ultralight helicopter under today's rules. Many were built, and some still fly.

  2. 1992

    The Safari debuts at Oshkosh

    The Safari is shown at the EAA convention in Oshkosh. The company had never advertised before July 1992 — customers came by word of mouth. Because it resembles a Bell 47, the design was also marketed for a time as the "Baby Belle."

  3. 2011

    The Safari 400

    The Safari 400 is introduced with a new, more robust rotor head, an engine governor and electric cyclic trim, among many other upgrades. Every critical component is individually serialized and tracked through material certification, dimensional inspection and assembly verification.

  4. 2018

    The Safari 500

    The Safari 500 arrives: the proven Safari drive train and controls inside an enclosed, sleeker cabin with a carbon-fiber exterior shell. It is first shown around 2018.
